My name is Malik Awolumate, and I am currently in my final year, final semester, studying International Business Management. In this blog, the main point is simple: this course has helped me understand global business, build real skills, and develop into a more confident and strategic thinker. Below are five things I genuinely like about it.
1. The course gives me a real understanding of global business 🌍
Understanding how business works in real-world environments is the most valuable thing I have gained from studying international business, particularly in relation to operations management and decision-making.
For example, in my Contemporary Issues in International Business module, I developed a market entry strategy for Whole Foods Market in Afghanistan. This showed me that business decisions are never just about profit. I had to consider cultural dynamics, environmental challenges, tribal systems, and political factors. It also highlighted how external conditions directly affect planning and execution, which is a key part of operations management.
This experience made it clear that without understanding the environment, even the strongest strategy can fail.

Also, in Global Context for Multinational Enterprises, I learnt how government policies shape business behaviour. A key point from this module is that business and politics are always connected. I explored how multinational companies sometimes take advantage of weak systems, especially in places like the Nigerian oil sector. At the same time, the module shows how businesses should act responsibly and contribute positively to society. That balance is something I now think about a lot.
2. The course gives me flexibility and opens many career paths
One of the biggest advantages of this course is that it doesn’t limit me to one career path. It has helped me build a broad understanding of international business, while also developing my knowledge in operations management and logistics and operations.
I’ve been exposed to different areas of business, including finance, strategy, and digital business, through modules like Operations and Project Planning, Managing Finance and Accounts, The Digital Business, and The Strategic Business. This has helped me understand how organisations work from different angles.
course is also structured well, starting with the basics and gradually moving into more advanced and strategic topics. What stands out most is that it’s not just theory. Opportunities like virtual placements and practical projects mean I’m gaining real experience while studying, while also developing skills in customer operations management and leadership and team management, preparing me for real roles after university.
3. The diverse environment prepares me for real global work
One thing I really value about this course is the diverse environment, which has helped me develop skills that are essential in international business.
Learning alongside people from different countries exposes me to different perspectives, cultures, and ways of thinking. This has improved how I communicate, work with others, and adapt to different situations, which is important in both operations management and leadership and team management.
It genuinely feels like preparation for working in multinational organisations, where teamwork across cultures is part of everyday work. It has also made me more aware of my own background and how I interact with others, which is an important part of personal and professional development.

4. The course develops practical skills I can actually use
The strongest part of this course is how practical it is, especially in building real skills in operations management and logistics and operations.
A good example is my Operations and Project Planning module, where I analysed H&M’s supply chain from start to finish, looking at how products move from suppliers to customers. This helped me understand how businesses actually operate in real life.
I also created tools like a stakeholder register and a work breakdown structure. At the time it felt like a lot, but now I realise these are real tools used in business. This experience showed me how planning, organisation, and efficiency work in practice, which is also important in customer operations management.

5. The course has helped me grow personally and professionally
This course has built my confidence, professionalism, and independence. I now feel more comfortable presenting ideas, working in teams, and taking responsibility, which are key skills in leadership and team management and customer operations management.
It has also changed the way I think. I approach problems more strategically, considering different factors before making decisions, which is essential in operations management. Instead of just accepting information, I now question it and think more critically.
Overall, I feel like I’ve moved from just being a student to someone who is starting to think and act like a business professional within international business.
